Canada's Medal of Bravery, the civilian decoration this coin commemorates, was established in 1972 as part of a wholesale reorganization of the Canadian honours system — the same restructuring that created the Order of Canada and severed the country's remaining formal ties to British imperial decorations. The coin's enamel-effect finish on .9999 fine silver was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's early experimentation with coloured coinage, a technique they had been refining since the 1999 millennium quarters.
