McDonald Island is one of the most remote and inaccessible places on Earth — an uninhabited volcanic outcrop in the southern Indian Ocean, part of the Australian external territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. No permanent population, no tourism, no infrastructure. Coins issued for such territories are produced solely for the collector market and see zero circulation by design. This piece was struck by the Royal Australian Mint as part of a broader series covering Australian external territories, none of which have any transactional economy to speak of.
