The Maria Theresa Thaler, originally struck from 1741, was restruck continuously by the Habsburg mint and later by mints in London, Bombay, Brussels, and Rome — always dated 1780, the year of her death, because Middle Eastern and East African traders refused any other date. Samoa's miniature gold tribute to that coin participates in a long tradition of commemorative issues capitalizing on that famously frozen date.
