Niue has long operated as a de facto mint-for-hire, licensing its sovereign issuing authority to private producers — primarily the New Zealand Mint — who sell directly to the collector market. This piece was never intended for circulation on the island, whose entire population numbers under 2,000.
The "Mainspring" release belongs to a mechanical wonders series capitalizing on collector interest in horology themes during the early 2010s. Production quantities were controlled by the issuing producer rather than any monetary authority.
