Additional information

The "Luncheon of the Boating Party" was painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1880–81, completed at the Maison Fournaise restaurant on the Seine at Chatou. The canvas is now held by the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., acquired by Duncan Phillips in 1923 for what was then a record price for any work sold in the United States. Niue has issued a considerable run of fine-art themed bullion coins under licensing arrangements — this series being among the more coherent of them, pairing recognizable Impressionist works with modest silver weights aimed squarely at the collector rather than the bullion buyer.
