The liger — a lion-tiger hybrid that occurs only in captivity when a male lion and female tiger breed — became a fixture of novelty wildlife coinage in the 2010s, when the British Virgin Islands licensing operation was producing themed collector issues at an industrial pace. These pieces were struck for the collector and gift market, not circulation, and the BVI's nominal sovereignty provided the legal issuing authority while actual production and distribution ran through third-party minting houses.
