The Fijian dollar coinage underwent significant redesign in 2009 ahead of the country's currency reform, which ultimately culminated in a complete decimalization overhaul in 2012 that reduced coin sizes dramatically and dropped the monarchy obverse entirely — a politically charged decision following Fiji's suspension from the Commonwealth after Frank Bainimarama's 2006 coup. This large copper-nickel dollar effectively represents one of the final issues before the military-led government severed that numismatic tie to the Crown.
