Obverse description Central field features the fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in right-facing profile, diademed and draped, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II curves above and NIUE ISLAND to the right, with the denomination 1 DOLLAR, the date 2011, and the fineness mark Ag 925 inscribed in the inner annulus. Surrounding the central medallion, a broad decorative border contains twelve raised circular cartouches, each depicting one of the twelve zodiac signs rendered in relief against a frosted ground, arranged in the manner of a zodiacal wheel.

Additional information

Niue's licensing agreements with the New Zealand Mint produced a wave of themed bullion and collector issues in the early 2010s, most tied to astrology, pop culture, or licensed IP rather than any event in Niuean history. This piece is squarely in that category — a revenue instrument for a microstate whose coin program exists almost entirely for the collector market, not domestic circulation.
