Le Chat Noir was a Montmartre cabaret that opened in 1881 and became the first modern nightclub in the recognized sense — a venue built around an artistic identity rather than simple entertainment. Rodolphe Salis ran it with calculated eccentricity, and Henri Rivière's shadow puppet theatre there attracted Debussy, Verlaine, and Aristide Bruant before the cabaret closed in 1897, just four years after Salis died.
