Niue has operated as a coin-issuing jurisdiction for international collectors since the 1970s, its legal tender status underwritten by New Zealand while its numismatic program functions almost entirely as a commemorative export. This piece appeared in 2015 as part of the broader ANZAC centenary wave, marking one hundred years since the April 1915 landings at Gallipoli — a campaign conceived largely by Churchill, executed catastrophically, and abandoned by January 1916 after roughly 130,000 Allied and Ottoman casualties combined.
KM#1297 is one of dozens of Gallipoli centenary issues across multiple issuing authorities that year.
