Niue's numismatic program has operated largely as a revenue-generating exercise for the island's government since the 1990s, licensing its Commonwealth coinage rights to foreign mints and distributors targeting the collector market. This piece, part of a broader orchid-themed series, was produced under that arrangement — almost certainly struck at a contracted facility rather than on the island itself, which has no mint.
Laelia undulata is a Brazilian epiphytic orchid, its habitat the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo state.
