Lachlan Macquarie served as Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821 and is directly responsible for the first currency manufactured in Australia — he authorized the holing of Spanish dollars to create the "holey dollar" and the central plug known as the "dump" in 1813, a practical solution to a chronic coin shortage in the colony.
