Niue has operated a legal tender licensing program since the 1990s, issuing collector coins under its sovereignty for commercial partners with no expectation of circulation. This piece belongs to a Star Wars series produced in cooperation with the New Zealand Mint, itself one of the more active mints in the Pacific-themed novelty collector market. The underlying licensing arrangement with Disney/Lucasfilm dates to a broader push following the 2012 acquisition of the franchise.
