King Stephen's reign (1135–1154) was defined almost entirely by a civil war known as The Anarchy, fought against Empress Matilda for the English throne. He was the last king of the House of Blois, and his death ended nearly two decades of baronial chaos that had fractured royal authority across England and Normandy. Cook Islands issued a long-running series of gold-plated crown-sized pieces featuring medieval English monarchs around this period, targeting the collector rather than any circulating need.
