Reverse description Facing three-quarter portrait of King Alfred the Great, depicted wearing a beaded crown and an ornate multi-strand pearl necklace with a brooch clasp at the shoulder, evoking the iconography of Anglo-Saxon coinage. The legend ALFRED arcs along the upper left field and REX along the upper right, flanking the royal effigy. Two small cross pattee symbols flank the denomination $1 in the lower field, with the Pobjoy Mint mark PM visible at the lower left of the portrait. The design draws inspiration from historical Alfred penny prototypes, rendered in a modern medallic style.
