Issued under license from the John Wayne Enterprise, this coin is part of Perth Mint's ongoing celebrity and entertainment licensing program, which has expanded aggressively since the 2010s to include Hollywood figures alongside the traditional wildlife and commemorative themes. Wayne died in 1979, and rights management of his image has remained tightly controlled by his estate ever since. Perth was chosen as issuer largely because Australian mint licensing frameworks are among the most commercially flexible in the sovereign minting world.
