| 正面描述 | The obverse bears the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as engraved by Ian Rank-Broadley, surrounded by an ornamental Chinese scroll pattern along the perimeter. The legend reads 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II · NIUE ISLAND' above, with 'ONE DOLLAR · 2019 ·' below, all in the field. The portrait and inscriptions are executed in a refined proof-quality relief consistent with the collector series to which this coin belongs. |

The Japanese trade dollar was struck from 1875 at the Osaka Mint specifically to compete with the Mexican peso in Asian commerce, particularly in China, where foreign silver was weighed rather than counted. It was never legal tender in Japan itself — purely an instrument of export trade policy under the Meiji government's drive to integrate into international commerce on favorable terms.
Niue's numismatic program has issued this as part of a broader trade dollar series. The original Japanese type circulated through treaty ports until 1897, when Japan's adoption of the gold standard rendered the whole exercise obsolete.
