Issued to mark the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's first voyage to Canada in 1534, this dollar appeared the same year Canada was quietly phasing out the large nickel dollar in favor of the smaller aureate-plated loonie, which would replace it entirely by 1987. The 1984 issue was among the last commemorative strikes in this format before that transition ended the series.
