Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten rounded Cape Horn in January 1616 — the first Europeans to do so — specifically to circumvent the Dutch East India Company's legal monopoly on the existing routes around Africa and through the Strait of Magellan. Le Maire's father Isaac had backed the voyage after the VOC had him expelled from the company; the entire expedition was, at its root, an act of commercial revenge. When they returned to the Dutch East Indies, VOC authorities seized their ship anyway on the grounds that they had violated the monopoly regardless of the new route.
