| Additional information |
Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Britain in August 1962, but the country's first decimal coinage series — replacing the Eastern Caribbean dollar — wasn't introduced until 1964. This 1972 dollar falls within that early post-independence series, issued as the young nation was consolidating its monetary institutions ahead of becoming a republic in 1976. The Central Bank itself had only been established in 1964, the same year the new coinage launched.
