Ilya Glazunov was one of the Soviet Union's most politically complicated artists — celebrated by the state for his monumental historical paintings while simultaneously maintaining deep Russian Orthodox and nationalist convictions that should have made him a dissident. He survived by being too famous to suppress. This coin was issued the year of his 80th birthday, two years before his death in 2017.
