Idar-Oberstein, a town in the Rhineland-Palatinate, built its gemstone trade on river agates and imported Brazilian stones from the 19th century onward, eventually becoming one of Europe's principal cutting and polishing centers. The amethyst dust incorporated into this coin's finish is a direct reference to that industry — the town has processed amethyst in commercial quantity since the mid-1800s, when Brazilian imports began replacing exhausted local deposits.
Solomon Islands issues of this type are struck under license arrangements common to small sovereign issuers; the actual production almost certainly took place at a European private mint.
