The Golden Hinde completed Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580 — the second such voyage in history and the first under a single commander. Elizabeth I knighted Drake aboard the vessel at Deptford in April 1581, a calculated diplomatic provocation that Spain interpreted, not incorrectly, as royal endorsement of privateering against their Pacific trade routes.
