The HMS Bounty mutiny of 1789 has generated more commemorative coinage than almost any other single naval event, largely because the story — Fletcher Christian, William Bligh, a longboat crossing of 3,600 miles — sells. Niue has issued coins under licensing arrangements with the New Zealand Mint since the 1990s, using its sovereignty to enter the bullion and collector market in a way its tiny Pacific economy otherwise could not support.
The 15.5g specification places this squarely in the half-troy-ounce category, a format that became increasingly popular with Pacific island issuers after 2010.
