正面描述 The obverse of this rectangular silver coin features a large colorized inset depicting a bust-length portrait of a man wearing a black hat and a vivid red scarf against an ochre background, rendered in the distinctive Post-Impressionist style of Toulouse-Lautrec. In the lower left quadrant, a raised rectangular cartouche contains the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a tiara, as designed for the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait series, with the legend ELIZABETH II arched to the left. The denomination 1 DOLLAR appears in raised lettering at the lower right of the field. The inscription NIUE ISLAND 2008 runs vertically along the right margin. A small red monogram appears in the lower right area of the colorized panel.

背面描述 The reverse of this rectangular silver coin presents a richly detailed composition commemorating the French Post-Impressionist painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. A high-relief engraved bust of the bearded artist wearing a bowler hat and pince-nez dominates the lower right of the field. To the upper left, a colorized vignette depicts a can-can dancer in a yellow and orange dress, characteristic of Lautrec's celebrated Moulin Rouge imagery. Behind the bust, an engraved scene shows a small figure of the artist at his easel. The artist's facsimile signature appears in the lower left field, flanked by the birth and death years 1864 and 1901. The full name HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC is inscribed in bold raised lettering within a dark rectangular banner at the base of the coin.

附加信息

Niue has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, effectively functioning as a mint-for-hire operation for foreign distributors targeting the collector market. This Toulouse-Lautrec piece is one of dozens of such issues — themed around artists, historical figures, and cultural icons — that bear the island's name largely because Niue offers a convenient and cooperative issuing authority, not because of any meaningful connection to the subject.

Toulouse-Lautrec died in 1901 at thirty-six, his health destroyed by alcoholism and the neurological effects of a hereditary bone condition.
