Heard Island and McDonald Islands constitute Australia's most remote external territory — an active volcanic archipelago roughly 4,000 kilometres southwest of Perth, uninhabited except for periodic scientific expeditions. Australia began issuing legal tender coinage for the territory largely to satisfy collector demand and to assert administrative presence, not because anyone on Heard Island has ever needed change.
