Cook Islands issued a long series of wildlife-themed bullion and collector dollars through the 1990s under licensing arrangements that kept actual minting well away from the islands themselves — most were produced by the British Royal Mint or private minting houses on contract. The flatback turtle designation refers to Natator depressus, a species endemic to Australian waters and notably absent from Cook Islands territory, which says something about how these series were assembled.
