Niue has operated a lucrative licensing arrangement with major entertainment properties since the 1990s, issuing legal tender coins under its monetary agreement with New Zealand. The Han Solo piece is part of a broader Star Wars series released in 2011 under license from Lucasfilm, timed to coincide with sustained franchise merchandising activity well before the Disney acquisition in 2012.
