Part of the "Smallest Gold Coins of the World" series issued under Cook Islands authority, this piece was produced at a moment when fractional bullion coinage in five-nines purity was becoming a competitive niche among Pacific island mints. The .99999 fineness — so-called "five nines" gold — was relatively uncommon in circulation-format coins at the time, requiring more careful refining than the standard .9999 used by most sovereign mint programs.
The Gregor V designation refers to a papal series. Gregory V, born Bruno of Carinthia, became the first German-born pope in 996 AD, installed through the direct influence of his cousin Otto III.
