John Hunter served as the second Governor of New South Wales from 1795 to 1800, appointed largely to clean up the mess left by the corrupt New South Wales Corps officers who had effectively hijacked the colony's economy under his predecessor John Philip Grose. His tenure was marked by constant obstruction from those same officers, and he was ultimately recalled to London — blamed by the Colonial Office for failing to suppress the very faction that had been undermining him from the start.
