William Bligh survived the 1789 mutiny on the Bounty only to face a second mutiny in 1808, when New South Wales Army officers and rum traders deposed him as Governor of the colony in what became known as the Rum Rebellion — the only successful armed overthrow of an Australian government. He was held under house arrest for over a year before being allowed to return to England, where a court martial ultimately sided with him.
