The "GML" designation refers to the Royal Canadian Mint's proprietary Gold Maple Leaf branding, used to distinguish fractional issues in coordinated sets from individually marketed bullion strikes. The 1/20 oz denomination has no practical circulation history — it was conceived entirely as a collectible subdivision, appealing to buyers who wanted Maple Leaf gold without the capital outlay of a full ounce. Canada introduced fractional Maple Leaf denominations progressively through the 1980s and 1990s, with the 1/20 oz among the smallest in the lineup.
The .9999 fineness — four nines — has been a Canadian Mint point of distinction since 1982, when it surpassed the Krugerrand's .9167 standard.
