The "Gilt Dragon" was a Dutch East India Company vessel wrecked off the Western Australian coast in 1656, nearly two decades before the more infamous Batavia disaster. Recovered silver and artifacts have been subject to ongoing legal disputes between salvagers and the Western Australian Museum, which claims jurisdiction over all historic wrecks in state waters under the 1976 Maritime Archaeology Act.
The coin incorporates a small fragment of timber reportedly recovered from the wreck site — a feature that drove the mintage structure and premium pricing of this issue.
