The Amber Route series, issued by Niue through the Polish Mint in Warsaw, commemorates the ancient overland trade network that carried Baltic amber south through Central Europe to the Mediterranean. Gdańsk — known historically as Danzig — sat at the northern terminus, where amber was harvested from the Baltic coast and loaded onto routes running as far as Rome and Aquileia. The trade predates written Polish history by centuries.
Polish Mint-produced issues for Niue are a well-documented arrangement; the mint has struck numerous collector series under the Niue license since the 2000s.
