| Obverse description | The obverse features the diademed and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing left, positioned in the lower left field, with the legend 'ELIZABETH II' and date '2011' inscribed beneath. To the right and center, a high-relief scene depicts a horse-drawn wagon in motion, evoking the ancient Amber Route trade caravans, set against a cartographic relief of Europe in the background. The denomination '1 DOLLAR' appears in the lower center field alongside the fineness mark 'Ag925', with the issuer inscription 'NIUE ISLAND' along the lower rim. The arc legend 'SZLAK BURSZTYNOWY' (Amber Route) curves prominently along the upper rim in bold relief. The overall composition integrates portraiture and thematic narrative in a unified, richly detailed design. |

The Amber Route series, issued by Niue through the Polish Mint in Warsaw, commemorates the ancient overland trade network that carried Baltic amber south through Central Europe to the Mediterranean. Gdańsk — known historically as Danzig — sat at the northern terminus, where amber was harvested from the Baltic coast and loaded onto routes running as far as Rome and Aquileia. The trade predates written Polish history by centuries.
Polish Mint-produced issues for Niue are a well-documented arrangement; the mint has struck numerous collector series under the Niue license since the 2000s.
