Part of the Royal Mint of New Zealand's broader program of themed commemorative dollars issued under Niue's name, this piece marks the centenary of Goya's reburial in Madrid — his remains had lain in Bordeaux since his death in 1828, and when they were finally returned to Spain in 1919, the skull was missing. It has never been recovered.
