The artist's facsimile signature 'Goya' is rendered in script relief across the lower center, flanked by the inscriptions 'FRANCISCO' to the left and '1746-1828' denoting his birth and death years below. Part of the Royal Mint of New Zealand's broader program of themed commemorative dollars issued under Niue's name, this piece marks the centenary of Goya's reburial in Madrid — his remains had lain in Bordeaux since his death in 1828, and when they were finally returned to Spain in 1919, the skull was missing. It has never been recovered.
