| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse bears the fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael David Maklouf, depicting a right-facing crowned and draped bust of the Queen. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left border, with the date 2011 positioned at the top of the field and NIUE ISLAND inscribed along the right border. Below the portrait, in the lower portion of the rectangular field, the inscription 1/9th of 9 Dollars appears in relief. The design is rendered in a high-relief proof finish on a highly polished background. |

The Villa of the Mysteries fresco, painted around 60–50 BC on the walls of a suburban Pompeian villa, survived the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius largely intact — one of the best-preserved painted cycles from the ancient world. Its subject remains contested: initiation rites, Dionysiac ritual, or a bridal preparation sequence, depending on which scholar you ask. Niue issued this nine-part fragmented series to reproduce the full frieze across individual coins, each carrying a discrete section.
