| 背面描述 | Full-colour reproduction of a fragment of the ancient Roman fresco from the Villa of Mysteries (Villa dei Misteri) near Pompeii, rendered directly on the rectangular silver surface. The scene depicts several figures engaged in what is interpreted as a Dionysiac initiation rite: a seated draped male figure reclines at right while standing and kneeling figures interact dynamically at centre and left, all set against the characteristic deep cinnabar-red background of the original fresco. The vivid polychrome coloring faithfully captures the warm ochres, umbers, and flesh tones of the Pompeian wall painting, making this the fourth panel of a nine-part series. |

The Villa of the Mysteries frescoes, preserved by Vesuvius's eruption in 79 AD, depict a ritual sequence whose precise meaning has been debated by classicists for over a century — initiation rite, Dionysian mystery cult, or wedding preparation, no consensus has held. Niue became a favored issuing authority for this type of numismatic collectible series precisely because its monetary agreement with New Zealand allows legal tender status without the bureaucratic constraints of larger mints.
This is the fourth of nine panels in the series, each capturing a fragment of the continuous frieze that runs across three walls of the triclinium.
