The "Gold Maple Leaf" fractional program expanded aggressively in the 2010s as the RCM pursued the growing market for small-denomination bullion accessible to retail investors. The 1/20 oz denomination sits at the lower practical limit for struck gold — below this size, handling losses and fabrication costs begin to erode the economics entirely. These pieces were issued in both standard and privy-marked variants; KM#1801 corresponds to the base issue without a security privy.
Canada's .9999 fineness standard, introduced on the Maple Leaf series in 1982 and later pushed to .99999 for select issues, remains one of the highest fineness benchmarks in government bullion coinage worldwide.
