Obverse description The obverse features a circular central cartouche set within a rectangular silver field, bearing the fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicting a right-facing diademed and draped bust of the Queen. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left border of the cartouche, with NIUE and 2016 along the right. The inscription 1 DOLLAR runs along the lower arc of the cartouche border, and the fineness mark Ag 999 appears in a rectangular tablet at the lower portion of the rectangular field. Additional information

Niue has functioned since the 1990s as a licensing vehicle for the New Zealand-administered mint program, issuing legal tender coinage it will never see in circulation. The "Stations of the Cross" series to which this piece belongs was produced for the Catholic devotional collector market, with each release timed around the Lenten calendar.

New Zealand Mint struck these on contract; the 17.5g weight is specific to this series format and doesn't align with any standard bullion denomination.
