1 Dollar - Elizabeth II First Flight from Australia to New Zealand

On September 10, 1928, Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm completed the first trans-Tasman flight in the Southern Cross, crossing roughly 2,670 kilometers of open ocean in just under 14 hours and 25 minutes. The feat was considered reckless by many — no aircraft had previously attempted the crossing, and weather forecasting across that stretch of the Tasman Sea was essentially guesswork.

Perth Mint issued this coin 75 years after that flight as part of its ongoing commemorative program. Kingsford Smith remained an Australian national figure until his disappearance over the Andaman Sea in 1935.
