Additional information

Issued to mark the 2019 quincentenary lead-up programming around Magellan's 1519–1522 circumnavigation, Fiji's connection to the voyage is largely geographic — the archipelago lies along the western Pacific corridor crossed by the expedition's survivors under Elcano after Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in April 1521. Gold-plated base metal issues of this type were produced for the collector and souvenir market, not circulation.
