Obverse description The national coat of arms of Trinidad and Tobago occupies the central field, featuring a shield divided into three sections bearing ships and a gold hummingbird, supported by a scarlet ibis on the left and a cocrico bird on the right, both standing on a rocky mound above stylised waves. A crest above the shield displays a ship's wheel surmounted by a palm tree, while a scroll below carries the national motto 'TOGETHER WE ASPIRE TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE'. The legend 'TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO' arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters, and the date '1969' appears in the lower field beneath the arms.

Additional information

This dollar was struck specifically for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which recruited participating nations to issue specially marked coinage in 1968–1970 as a vehicle for publicizing the FAO's campaign against global hunger. Trinidad and Tobago's participation reflected the islands' agricultural export economy — sugar and cocoa — at a moment when the FAO was pressing Caribbean governments to align national policy with food security goals. The nickel composition was a deliberate departure from the existing cupro-nickel dollar series.
