Pitcairn's coinage exists largely as a collector enterprise — the island's population has never exceeded a few dozen, making any circulating currency programme effectively redundant. This 1990 dollar marks the bicentennial of the Bounty mutineers' arrival on Pitcairn, when Fletcher Christian led a group of nine mutineers, six Tahitian men, and twelve Tahitian women to the island in January 1790, burning the Bounty shortly after to avoid detection.
The New Zealand Mint struck issues for Pitcairn throughout this period under licensing arrangements, with the coins sold almost exclusively to philatelic and numismatic subscribers worldwide.
