The Pitcairn Islands, a British Overseas Territory with a population rarely exceeding fifty people, adopted its first written constitution in 1838 — drafted under the authority of British naval captain Elliott following the chaotic early decades of Bounty mutineer settlement. The 1988 silver issue marks the 150th anniversary of that document, which remains one of the earliest written constitutions in the Pacific.
Pitcairn's coinage has never circulated in any practical sense; the island has no monetary economy to speak of, and issues like this one were produced exclusively for collector export.
