Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the marriage of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who wed at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947 — a ceremony broadcast on BBC radio to an estimated 200 million listeners worldwide, though television coverage was initially resisted by the Palace. Cook Islands had been producing commemorative coinage of this type since the 1970s, exploiting its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand to mint pieces primarily targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
