Dent Island is a private island in the Marlborough Sounds, and its appearance on a New Zealand legal tender issue reflects the country's long-running non-circulating collector dollar program, which has licensed local and commercial subjects since the 1990s. These copper-nickel pieces were struck by the New Zealand Mint for direct sale rather than bank distribution — never intended to trade hands as currency.
