The Datsun 240Z — sold in North America from 1969 — was Nissan's calculated bid to capture the affordable sports car market left partially open by rising prices on European imports. It worked: over 150,000 units sold in the US alone during its production run. Tuvalu's ongoing series of themed collector issues in the mid-2000s drew on global automotive nostalgia, pairing Pacific island sovereignty with subjects that have no geographic connection to the issuer whatsoever.
KM#55 belongs to a run of similar issues from this period, all struck to one-troy-ounce .999 fineness and sharing the same 40.6mm planchet specification across subjects.
