The D Series was introduced by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority in 2010 as a transitional update rather than a full redesign — retaining the general character of the previous series while incorporating upgraded security substrates. De La Rue's involvement here is unremarkable given their longstanding relationship with British Overseas Territories, most of which route their currency production through the same London facility.
The Cayman dollar has been pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 1 KYD to 1.20 USD since 1974 — one of the highest-valued dollar-denominated currencies in the world, sustained by an offshore financial sector rather than any productive export base.
